The most common mistakes
In a child custody dispute, your behaviour as a parent matters greatly, particularly when the conflict becomes prolonged. Here are some of the mistakes we see most often:
- You send long, angry text messages out of frustration
- You let your child hear things about the other parent
- You use contact with your child as leverage
- You take the conflict onto social media
- You fail to keep important records
Why your behaviour matters in court
The court assesses not only what has been said, but also how you and the other parent behave during the proceedings. Many parents underestimate how quickly the legal position can change.
What you write or do today may become central to an investigation or hearing several months later. An angry text message, a social media post or a contact visit that does not take place may all be assessed in light of the child’s best interests.
What can you do instead?
Keep communication with the other parent factual and concise, keep your child out of the conflict and retain relevant records. If necessary, a legal representative can help you manage the proceedings in a way that does not harm your position.
